The Beatstalkers (instrumental)

In his liner notes for 'The R & B Scene # 2' compilation, Brian Hogg stated that this is the original instrumental that Tommy Scott later had lyrics added to. I've been unable to verify that story and I have serious doubts about it because The Beatstalkers single was released July 1966, which means that it's most likely a cover and not the original at all ('I Can Only Give You Everything' by Them was released January 1966). One thing that's for certain is that Tommy Scott, who came from Scotland himself produced the first three Beatstalkers singles on Decca. He even wrote a tune, 'Left Right Left' especially for them. Check out this excellent R&B stomper on the 'Justification' comp. 'A Love Like Yours' was originally done by Ike & Tina Turner. Check out the complete Beatstalkers story told by fellow Scot Lenny Helsing of Thanes & Wildebeests fame in Misty Lane # 17. Lenny also states that 'Base Line' was the blueprint version: 'Hidden on the flipside of 'A Love Like Yours' was a killer beat instrumental, 'Base Line', which would soon become that all-time garage band fave-rave 'I Can Only Give You Everything', once Tommy Scott got Bill Martin to scribble some words and get Them, and The Troggs both to record it - followed by an unforgettable onslaught of US teen punk combos too, of course. The Beatstalkers already had the scathing fuzz guitar attack in place on their blueprint version, although it's somewhat burried in the mix under the louder proclamation of some swinging organ riffery, played as ever by the be-shaded figure of Eddie Campbell.' Gee, I don't know what to make of it. Perhaps 'Base Line' was recorded somewhere late 1965 and held in the can for a couple of months because I'm pretty sure it wasn't released until July of 1966. 'Base Line' is credited to (Tommy Scott) as BMI work # 89290, published by Carlin & Prancer Music. 'I Can Only Give You Everything', by the way, is BMI work # 607021 and is published by Carbert Music. Line-up on this record: Davie Lennox (lead vocals) - Ronnie Smith (lead guitar/vocals) - Alan Mair (bass) - Eddie Campbell (organ/guitar) - Tudge Williamson (drums). Produced by Tommy Scott.
