The Road
|
We're moving into psychedelic soul territory with this one. Yeah, I know, 1969 doesn't exactly promise anything good and this one used to scare me off too. I mean 'I Can Only Give You Everything' is a bit of a strange cover
choice for any band in 1969. But The Road's version sounds so cheesy, you gotta hear it. For a start, there's no sign of the fuzz riff anywhere. Try imagining the original lyrics set to Wilson Pickett's 'Midnight Hour' and you get
a good idea of how this sounds. Yes, there's a horn section involved in the process too, a saxophone solo (!), a cheesy harpsichord, a Hammond B3... Definitely not for the weak of heart. If you really wanna hear something
scary, you gotta hear The Road tackle 'A Taste Of Honey'. At times they wander into prog territory as well, one of the cuts, a version of The Zombies' 'She's Not There' was nearly a hit in February 1969 (#114 in the
Billboard bubbling under charts). 2 Buffalo Springfield songs aren't spared either. 'Rock And Roll Woman' get's the full prog treatment and 'Mr. Soul' is given a (no surprise) psychedelic soul touch. This album can be found
very cheap so do yourself a favor and pick it up. The end result is so cheesy, you're gonna fall for it. The album made it to #199 on the Billboard album charts in January 1970. The Road were originally from Milwaukee but
later moved to Buffalo, NY. Kama Sutra KLPS-8075 was issued just as Kama Sutra was ending the distribution deal with MGM, it was quickly reissued as Kama Sutra KSBS-2012 and distributed by Buddah. Kama Sutra
KLPS-8075 was only issued as a promo. Line-up: Jerry Hudson (lead vocals) - Phil Hudson (lead vocals) - Joseph Hesse (bass) - Jim Hesse (organ) - Ralph Parker (lead guitar) - Nick Distefano (drums). Produced by Rencor
Productions.
