Apparently there also exists a live version.
If you believe the guys at EVA, that is. It is, however, nothing of the
kind. EVA released a true Ronnie Bird live EP but 'En Public' (which means
'Live') is NOT a live album by any means. It features nothing but studio
cuts, taken from EP's, with fake applause dubbed over. What a rip-off!
But that of course is what EVA is famous for. EVA never bothered to obtain
the rights for anything they ever released, but even they knew that bootlegging
Ronnie Bird would be a bit of a problem. So they had to come up with something
else to fool the authorities. At that time there were a couple of gaps
as far as live concerts were in the copyright laws of the European community
and that gave EVA the idea they could fool everybody. They didn't have
any live tapes so they simply added some fake applause over some of Ronnie's
greatest hits and voila, problem solved! To make things even worse EVA
severely re-edited the song as well. All in their typical slipshod manner,
of course. This version is more than a minute longer because you get the
intro twice (no shit!), there are now 2 organ solos and the coda (including
the fade-out!) is repeted no less than 3 times. After that you even get
a repeat of the opening riff, it's in a different key (G instead of G#)
but EVA probably figured that noone would notice. Well they certainly
fooled some, including several critics who reviewed the album.
One final curious remark: the album - believe it or not - was authorised
by Ronnie Bird himself (avec l'aimable autorisation de Ronnie Bird). |
