The Troggs
Released almost exactly one year after Them's version in February 1967 by Britain's only punk band, at least of the sixties. Here's what lead singer Reg Presley had to say about their music: 'We always did the kind of tunes that any kid just learning guitar could pick up and play'. They ought to give the man a statue for that statement. 'You don't have to be into Tchaikovsky to have a go at one of our records. I suppose we must have inspired a lot of people to believe they could have a go themselves'. This version remained unreleased in the States until 1976, sad but true. The song ends with a short rave-up type of thing, which was only copied occasionally by other bands. Bonus points as well for Reg Presley's bizarre sense of humor in the introduction. The song starts with Reg mumbling something in his local dialect, which is not that easy to comprehend if you're not from Andover! So here it is in plain English: 'You think I like you? You think I like...' followed by the sound of a shotgun being fired. Totally sick and outrageous!!! I wonder what's the story behind this. Only released as a 45 in Belgium, albeit as a B-side. What's more surprising is that the 45 was released in 1971! The Troggs on this recording were: Reg Presley (vocals) - Chris Britton (guitar) - Pete Staples (bass) - Ronnie Bond (drums). Produced by Larry Page.
