What's the big idea? I Try, And I Try... for 35 odd years this song has been on the repertoire of so many garage bands that it's hard to keep track of all the different versions that were commited to vinyl and CD. I was able to find no less than 75 different versions and I'm afraid that's only the tip of the iceberg. Ever since the original by Them was released in January 1966 bands from all over the world immediately included it in their playlists and (thankfully) a whole lot of them recorded it as well. What is it that makes this song so irresistible? Well, according to my Dutch pal Theo De Grood who runs the excellent Louie Louie website that gave me the idea for this very site, the answer is very simple. Anyone who has held a guitar in his hands for 5 minutes can learn how to play the song in even less time. The only thing that matters from that point is the guts and the brutality to perform it live. I couldn't have put it any better myself. But it's not only the sheer simplicity of the song and the fact that you don't have to be a musical genius to learn how to play it that made it a classic. 'I Can Only Give You Everything' has got it all! A hypnotising killer guitar riff, gutwrenching vocals, an ingenious key shift and lyrics that set an example for countless other great songs. What could be more cool than that? Nothing, I tell ya! No matter how many different takes of this song I heard in the past, I wouldn't mind hearing a 1000 more. Ever since I first heard The Little Boy Blues' version some 20 years ago, I started collecting every other version I could lay my hands on. Most people think I'm nuts for having such an interest but then again most people wouldn't know a good thing from a hole in the ground. But not you my friend, or you wouldn't be reading this, would you. Meanachem Turchick, who runs a.o. the excellent 'Freakout USA' zine with his brother Efram and runs the 'Searchin' For Shakes' website/database suggested that it would be a great idea to put all information regarding the 101 versions on a website. After I got in touch with Theo De Grood through his Louie Louie site, there was no turning back and the results of my search are now here for you to discover: a detailed list of all the different versions that I could find. I'm still looking for all versions in red, please contact me if you
have any of these.
